Rhodes Statue - Listed Building Protected Status
The new owner of Harrods had to apply for consent to remove the statue of Lady Diana and Dodi Fayed. Consent was granted on the following conditions. The text in brackets would be the answer for the statue of Cecil Rhodes on the exterior of the listed Rhodes Building in Oxford.
8.10.2 It is not an integral element of the historic building interior. (Rhodes statue is an integral element of the historic Rhodes Building).
8.10.3 It does not contribute to the broader historical narrative of the building. (Rhodes statue does contribute to the broader historical narrative of the building).
8.10.4 It is a freestanding work of art and is a movable object. (Rhodes statue is not an easily movable object.)
8.10.5 It is a temporary installation. (Rhodes statue is a permanent installation.)
8.10.6 It is not a fixture of the Grade II * listed building. (Rhodes statue is a fixture of the Grade II* listed building.)
8.10.7 Its removal will not harm the special interest of the building. (The removal of the Rhodes statue would harm the special interest of the building.)
8.12 The statue is not included in the DCMS listing of Harrods. (Rhodes statue is included in the DCMS listing of the Rhodes Building.)
I have emailed the relevant planning department and Heritage England to find out why the Rhodes statue is being removed despite it clearly benefiting from protected status.
